In one dimension, a plus or minus sign distinguishes the only two possible directions. In a plane, infinitely many directions are possible, so position, displacement, velocity and acceleration require vectors.

A plane is described using two perpendicular axes, usually x and y. Every vector can then be replaced by two signed components. The component motions obey ordinary one-dimensional kinematics and combine to produce the observed path.

Independence of components: x-motion does not create y-motion and vice versa. Time is the common link between them.

A position needs an origin and two independent coordinates. The signed x and y equations use the same clock: at any one instant, their ordered pair locates the particle. A change along one axis does not force a change along the other. Average velocity over an interval is the displacement vector divided by the elapsed time; it uses both signed components. When interpreting a drawn path, distinguish the vector joining its endpoints from the path length.

Worked example: From (−2,1) to (1,5), the displacement components are (+3,+4) m and its magnitude is 5 m.
