A grazing food chain (GFC) begins with living producers and follows their consumption by herbivores and carnivores. NCERT gives grass → goat → human as a simple example. Producers capture solar energy, primary consumers eat them and secondary consumers eat primary consumers. The arrows conventionally point toward the recipient of transferred matter and energy.

In an aquatic system the GFC is a major route of energy flow. Every food chain is a simplification because animals often have varied diets and feed into webs. A goat may eat grass but is not an autotrophic producer. A carnivore occupying the third level receives far less energy than entered the producer level, contributing to a limited number of higher grazing-chain levels. Always determine the arrow direction from food to eater before naming trophic roles.

Worked example: Grass stores 10,000 units; using a rough 10% transfer, goat receives ~1,000 and human ~100.
