Typical motile eukaryotic cilia and flagella are membrane-covered projections with an internal axoneme. The standard textbook motile axoneme has nine peripheral microtubule doublets and two central singlet microtubules: the 9+2 arrangement. Cilia are generally shorter and more numerous, while flagella are often longer and fewer; both share this basic comparison.

The notation counts groups, not eleven individual microtubules. Nine doublets contribute eighteen component microtubules and the central pair adds two, giving twenty in the simplified cross-section count. Not every component is structurally an independent complete tube; one member of each doublet is incomplete and shares part of its wall. Questions here count the labelled components, not tubulin molecules or complete protofilament cylinders.

Dynein-associated activity and linking structures convert relative movement within the axoneme into bending. Basal bodies anchor these projections and have a different nine-triplet organisation. A basal body therefore should not be assigned the same central pair as a typical 9+2 shaft.

The word typical matters: some non-motile primary cilia have a 9+0 pattern, and specialised exceptions exist. Bacterial flagella are constructed differently and are not evidence for a universal 9+2 rule across all life.

Worked example: Two supplied typical 9+2 axoneme sections contain 2×(9×2+2)=40 microtubule components in the simplified counting convention.
