Mitosis helps a multicellular organism grow, renew tissues and repair damage by creating daughter cells with the same ordinary chromosome complement as their parent. In unicellular eukaryotes, division can also produce new individuals. Balanced segregation is the central requirement: each daughter nucleus should receive one copy of each chromosome after a prior S-phase replication.

A diploid 2n=12 parent typically produces two 2n=12 daughters through mitosis followed by cytokinesis. The count is per daughter. It is incorrect to say that mitosis creates two 2n=24 daughters merely because sister chromatids briefly count as separate chromosomes at anaphase within the one parent cell.

Growth does not always require a cell to divide at a constant rate. Entry into or exit from the cycle changes tissue proliferation. Unregulated division is linked to pathological growth; one incorrect division does not, by itself, prove a particular diagnosis.

Chromosome stability refers to number and broadly similar inherited information in ordinary mitotic offspring; it is not a claim that every tissue cell has exactly the same expressed genes, size, cytoplasm or mutation history.

Worked example: Starting from a single cell, three completed binary mitotic divisions in every lineage yield 2³=8 cells in a simplified no-loss model.
