Living systems use similar types of biomolecules and metabolic transformations across many organisms. This shared chemistry does not mean every organism has the same concentration of each metabolite or every enzyme has the same substrate. Interactions among molecules under cellular conditions give rise to ongoing processes.

The living state is dynamic. Molecules enter and leave pools while reaction networks maintain concentrations within ranges. A steady-state pool can have continuous turnover; a non-living equilibrium mixture with no net change is not automatically a metabolically active cell.

Enzymes catalyse successive conversions, and cofactors can couple energy and redox transfers. Information-bearing nucleic acids support protein production; the resulting proteins contribute to pathways and cell structure. Lipid membranes form boundaries within which these reactions are regulated.

A model can illustrate dynamic balance: if 12 units of a metabolite are produced and 9 consumed in a minute, the pool grows by 3 units in that minute. A different balanced case of 12 and 12 has zero net change despite 12 units turning over.

Worked example: A production flow of 12 units/min and consumption flow of 9 units/min yields net growth of 3 units/min in a simplified pool.

NCERT trap: A constant amount is compatible with rapid production and use; do not equate steady state with absent metabolism.

NEET method: Track pool size, input flux and output flux as three different quantities.

Supplied model: production 12 units/min and use 9 units/min; constant flows over the four intervals.
